Fish oil is reach in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  EPA and DHA play a fundamental role in the reproduction dynamic, being precursors of eicosanoids (including the PGF of series 3) which exert an anti-inflammatory action and stimulate the progesterone production. It is known that the supplementation of dairy cow diets with EPA and DHA may significantly increase the pregnancy rate (M. Ballard et al.; 2018).

High cost of the classic microencapsulation method and bad smell of the final product may represent a limit to the usage of microencapsulated fish oil

The four main challenges for an efficient usage of EPA and DHA in ruminants are:

  • protect EPA and DHA from the biohydrogenation in the rumen
  • produce microencapsulated EPA and DHA without fish smell and with high palatability for the cows
  • guarantee a high bioavailability of EPA and DHA in the gut
  • implement a microencapsulation process with economically sustainable costs for the feed producers and the farmers
